I’ve avoided this since I was a teenager but dang, I was missing out. I can trace the line from this to Freaks and Geeks; some scenes, situations, and characters seemed almost be interchangeable between the two. Looking forward to rewatching this.

Assignment Terror 1970
Grateful for this introduction to Paul Naschy’s Count Waldemar Daninsky: the brooding, sympathetic werewolf. I could imagine napping through the rest of his movies if they are equally plodding and silly. I also enjoyed the Frankenstein’s monster with closed eyes and the monitors in the lab that mostly showed closeups of the monsters’ heads.

The Breakfast Club 1985
This whole movie felt like Daniel Desario’s speech about how he got held back.

The Savages 2007
The Savages was much more gentle and sweet than I expected. When this came out, I remember the marketing made me file this away with the flood of mediocre dark and quirky indies that came out in the 2000s that I avoided. I just saw Slums of Beverly Hills in the past year so I didn’t know Tamara Jenkins, but I feel like my love of Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman should have merited a watch by now. Everything was really well done-great soundtrack, beautiful cinematography, complex characters. There’s also a good essay about Hoffman’s performance on the Criterion website.
