Emily Brontë is always going to remain an enigma; she lived a short life and we can only infer her complex interiority from her writing and her sister's telling of her story, which is decidedly not neutral. And while I think Emma Mackey does an excellent job of fleshing out Emily (minus the Leading Lady in a Period Drama Hair), this movie unfortunately relies on cliched biopic conventions - I don't need you to make up a torrid forbidden romance…

I love spectacle! I love big dumb historical epics! Many such are my favourites, including other ones by Ridley Scott! Unfortunately this was simply too dumb and full of clumsy shortcuts to tolerate. Awful, awful VFX, and the history and script and production design were so poorly handled that I felt embarrassed for the excellent actors in the cast, though I'm glad at least Denzel looked like he had a good time. (Pedro... did NOT look like he had a good time. Paul Mescal doesn't look like he has ever had a good time.)

Bette Davis being dreadful in a pompadour on a staircase is a magnificent thing to watch and rewatch.

More than most of the rest of this year's Oscar slate (which I'm currently wading my way through), this movie immediately made me want to read reviews and chew over its meaning. It definitely feels built from the Themes and Ideas outward, which rings a bit hollow at times (and I think the whole project would have collapsed absent Adrien Brody's totally realised and uncompromising performance), but I always appreciate a big swing.
