    This was really tough to rate. It’s an interesting look into these lives, but I ultimately couldn’t decide what the point was. Some good performances, especially Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon and Tom Hardy. I’ve seen a lot of guff and ridicule of the accents, but living near Chicago, they sounded convincing enough to me. Great soundtrack. 

    I didn’t mark like, but I probably wouldn’t have marked dislike either if that was an option.

    The best aspects were echoes of better movies. Some of the performances were good, particularly the lead. The writing was the weak link. I’ll have light to moderate SPOILERS to address why. There are two twists. The first twist is an ok concept carried out in an underwhelming manner.     This was extremely difficult to give a rating. I loved aspects and really didn’t care for others. It definitely went on longer than it seemed to warrant. 

    My snide comment during the final act was that I liked it a great deal when it was a Cronenberg film but it lost me when it morphed into an Eli Roth movie. 

    This had brilliant insights I haven’t seen elsewhere, and it also alienated me and overstayed its welcome. Very complicated reaction to this. 

    The performances were certainly award-worthy.

    It’s Denis Villenueve, so it’s very well made. Perhaps that’s part of my problem with it; it’s too effective in evoking the events it portrays.
