This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
It’s been approximately two months since I first laid eyes on Frances Ford Coppola’s syncopated passion project Megalopolis. It’s been two months since I decided that I would give this film the time I felt that it felt it was due to digest and breakdown each of the seemingly off-beat cogs and screws that are supposed to make it work. It’s been two months of periodically returning to thoughts of the film, only to be blindsided with a juxtaposition of…
I thoroughly enjoyed this. The opening ratio calls to 70s horror nostalgia, and intersperses well with the 90s, Silence of the Lambs pastiche. Successfully terrifying, with great pace, and a supernatural commitment that I wasn't expecting. Performances were creepy and restrained, adding to the sense of menace throughout. Cage was characteristically unhinged - no amount of makeup and prosthesis could contain is derangement. Great stuff.
I'll hate me for saying this. This is as close to perfect as a film can get. Across multiple viewings, Antichrist offers a variety of readings. From structuralist to post, gender theory to toxic masculinity, and political economy to socialised constructs. Antichrist is a film that sets itself firmly in the genre of horror but then pivots to encapsulate the inquiry of a love story gone wrong. Perfectly acceptable popcorn amusement. Holds up well for, probably because it's full of heavy hitters enjoying themselves between other projects. Well shot; has a Nancy Myers sensibility, with a very relaxed pace.
Perfectly acceptable apart from all the not-so-latent misogyny rolling side to side like a turbulent ship. Men are misunderstood victims of a crumbling societal masculinity, and, if they rediscover their confidence, they too can conquer strange women from the same goddamn bar, and then capture happiness. Women are here unfortunately tools that serve to reawaken men's agency...and that's about it.
It's fine. I'm just a moan.
