Wide open. The landscapes, that moonlit sandy valley. Pernell Roberts being way better than he has a right to be. “Because I like you, Whit.” “…I never knew that!” James Coburn’s perfect debut. Randolph Scott in the showdown, goddam. Frank didn’t stand a chance. Ice cold. Beautiful movie, so rich in performance and composition. Up there with Searchers in western closing shots.
An eerie, captivating, distressing puzzle box that doesn’t fully reveal itself except in the harmony of its images and tones. The repeated and altered scenes that follow their internal logic, sequences that oscillate between memory and dream, contribute to what was an oddly whole experience for me. It’s complete, even if incomprehensible. The performances are perplexing, but visceral as they should be; conduits of those urges and emotions that can rarely be effectively portrayed outside this heightened form (envy/jealousy, lust,…
