Having been committed to a mental hospital the fall after I graduated high school, I think this film was a slightly different experience for me. I’m trying (struggling) to separate the Hollywood film from the portrayal of very real mental illness. It’s more a coming of age story than it is a story about mental health. Like other non-Parasite Bong Joon Ho movies, some of the set pieces land and are incredible, others fall a little flat, but all are bizarre in a fun way. The dinner scene was a particularly high point for me.
Pattinson was great as Mickey. Didn’t love Mark Ruffalo or Toni Collette. Not sure I liked the aliens.
She was not wearing white, but Demi Moore was indeed in trouble.
Deeply unsettling. A great use of body horror that has left me pretty rattled and had some genuinely distressing scenes and also gave me a lot of anxiety about getting old. I was so uncomfortable about 3/4 of the way through that I was hoping for it to end.
