High Hopes 1988
This film, like so many of Mike Leigh’s Thatcher-era works, is largely about class disparity, miscommunication, and irreconcilable world-views. For while “high hopes” to Cyril look like a Marxist utopia where everyone has enough to eat and a place to lay their head at night, “high hopes” to his sister means an extra half-bathroom, perfectly teased hair, opera tickets, and a cursory stroke from her muskrat of a husband.
TL;DR Mike Leigh is an expert in fixing his gimlet eye on these sharp societal divides, and I’m even more motivated now to continue working my way through his filmography :’)
