  Scott Cooper just makes boring movies.

  I don’t know what it is, but each of his films that I’ve seen (Out of the Furnace, Black Mass, Hostiles) are great concepts or ideas that on paper should work, especially with the calibre of actor Cooper is able to recruit - multiple Bale projects, Woody Harrelson’s villain in Out of the Furnace is a good performance, Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal here. My suspicion is that what draws these kinds of actors…
