    really, really loved this, and also had quite a hard time watching it. I see so much of my mother—and my mother’s relationship with her mother—in Pansy it’s not even funny. I know how it is to live this way, to be brimming with anger and pain and no healthy understanding of how to express it. it can, and will, kill you if you let it. Marianne Jean-Baptiste gives the performance of her career, and it made me cry a lot. Mike Leigh’s kinda Britain’s Kelly Reichardt if you think about it.

    I could live inside Kaurismäki’s warm, dreary, mid-century interiors. also love the way he shoots people, with such an empathetic and curious eye. this was just so charming, and a beautiful affirmation of the possibility of love and difference in a working-class life of crushing sameness. made me smile a lot :)
