A revenge story that acknowledges the futility of revenge.
The world depicted is full of no truly good people, save maybe Olga. Amleth’s mother, who he has quested for so long to rescue, curses and denies him in the end. And Amleth himself pines so much for vengeance, all the while turning a blind eye to the atrocities he’s committing.

I struggle to explain how much this movie (and franchise) means to me. When I was 3 years old my grandmother let me “borrow” her copies of all 5 vhs tapes. I had no intention of returning them. In fact, I was so paranoid that someone would break into my house and steal them in the night, that I slept with all 5 tapes under my pillow. Every night.

Technical aspects are fantastic. Highlights being the score, editing, cinematography, and performances (Zendaya specifically).
Unfortunately Zendaya plays Satan (fall from grace, desperate need for others to serve her will, etc.) and the two male leads don’t do much to win me over (save for Art near the end). When everyone is evil I’m not compelled to care for their outcomes.
Likely won’t rewatch.
I would pay good money to watch Mike Tyson throat punch Earline into the afterlife.
