After reading the novel and now rewatching the movie I cannot perceive the movie as anything but a compilation of memes and reaction gifs. I think it's a good testament to the impact of the movie on the pop culture and the great casting choice.
Even though upon rewatching my brain was polluted beyond any hope with memes, the book and to the lesser extent the movie do a great job critiquing the yippie culture. The movie itself felt linear, somewhat simplistic. The ending is definitely more complex and moving than the whole whole 2 hours of this movie that we watched.
