What a debut from an unbelievably expressive face!

If you are unfamiliar with the Dardenne's cinema, it is very cinema vérité, kitchen sink drama and long takes are prevalent.
In fact, it's almost as if their shot choices make their characters secondary to the larger socio-economic realities at hand.
Cronenberg's jury gave this the Palme D'Or in '99 and it was quite a "gritty" choice at the time.
Rosetta literally does not know any better as she has never had…

2 things I kept thinking on rewatch:

    1. Amateur stunt driver and ensemble member Skip Sidduth's unique features that we have never seen again on screen.
    2. De Niro '98 is Prime Male Specimen here - that haircut! 🥵

FrankenBullitting through Nice, Katarina Witt murdering the ice, GORGEOUS McElhone, Lonsdale teaching us the Way we didn't understand when watching Seven Samurai/Karate Kid as "youts", Boromir and Dr Erik Selvig filling the slots and of course my only Professional: Jean Reno.
Also: if I was kajillionnaire I would produce a video game based on this film, voice actors and all.

    One star for their wigs.

Somehow I wanna Captcha that "Have a nice day"-original-yellow-emoji face from the sidekick robot character who has, guess what, FEELINGS.

I wonder if Eleven felt this would go well as a double Netflix feature with Damsel? Oh, was that the deal? Oh, ok.

I can say this with the utmost confidence that this film would've irritated me as a child, even with the Robot Wonder Science.

With the voice of Chris Parnell asking Ron Burgundy…

Peele was very clever starting the film with Gordy - it created instant unease that permeated throughout.
I loved how he played with electronics and sound and how you experienced that literally with the characters - "Did I really see that flash/shadow?"
Super casting - really some of the best in that year. 🙌🏻
A film I really wished I'd seen on the big screen!
He gave lots of shoutout love to Spielberg, but his creativity was his own here.

"Didn't I tell you this motherfucker would come up with a Non-Electrical Camera? Let's go, boy! Yeah!"
