i was surprised at how funny yet tragic the movie is. there were so many unexpected one-liners that had me and sarah cackling but also very tender and vulnerable scenes. i do wish we got more of ani’s interiority but mikey madison gave a killer performance overall. ending scene lingered long after i watched it.

The Power of the Dog 2021
i was gagged. cinematography was absolutely stunning and the score was incredible. costuming deserved awards and i’m so glad jane campion got her oscar. everyone in the cast did such a good job of showing the complexities of each character and how they interact with each other and the environment. i could (and did) go on rants abt how well campion plays with the structure and themes of the genre. i will say my experience was definitely elevated by having the historical knowledge from an american west history class and also hearing leila weefur’s introduction. will be thinking about this for the next year.
