  So many inspired ideas. Most every moment is using a device- either mimicking hamlet or cutting to symbolic motifs. Even the lines of dialogue feel like isolated experiments in creativity. Unfortunately, none of it is very cohesive. I think the second and third act flow a lot more naturally than the hamlet stuff in the beginning. It is obvious Gus Van Sant was stitching together 3 different scripts.

  I think It is spiritually akin to Midnight Cowboy in a lot of it’s a themes and execution.

  just astonishingly little to say. a subject with infinite depth and room for analysis and this doc spends it’s runtime playing 60’s hits over archival footage of the vietnam war and civil rights riots. various talking heads of culture critics who pontificate about “the zeitgeist” for 90 minutes. 

  there’s brief insights. any audio clips of john schlesinger or anecdotes about waldo salt or james leo herlihy are fascinating. but it’s really not about analyzing the story or themes of midnight cowboy…
