The concern for her security was regarding people on the outside, those shaming her for standing up, when really the greatest threat to her life was the trauma she was already living with. The quiet torment of this woman is devastating and more reason to praise and be grateful for her courage. A story so intense, there wasn’t even a need for music.

Had to be alone for a few hours after this one.. Boldly shows us what we are often negated from seeing on screen, especially in more traditional cultures. Condoms, consent, respect for women’s bodies and appropriate response when they’re not makes it feel like something that should be required viewing for older teens. Complexity of mother daughter relationship and unconditional love harkens back to everything everywhere all at once. Perfect.

Mixed feelings.. didn’t want it to end. Often unpredictable in style in narrative, exciting, stressful. Borderline safdie bros. But I’m side eyeing Sean Baker hard. Why him to tell a story like this and this way? … why’s this woman getting thrown around so much? And why’s there always some goon sweeping her off her feet?
