The screenplay is not great -- the plot is barely sketched out, the dialogue is too often on-the-nose. Joan Fontaine is the best thing in the movie, but before long, her hidden nastiness becomes obvious and you just start to wonder why most other characters don't notice. And even when they do notice, they don't tell the oblivious husband, who's being taken for a ride.
