A little dark, a little humorous and I enjoyed the casting, but otherwise not a very memorable film. Could be a good choice for a date night/Valentine’s Day film if you’re wanting to avoid any cliché lovey dovey movies or rom-coms. If you can hold out on seeing it, you’re better off waiting to stream it. Probably won’t watch it again, so I’m giving it an average rating.

I’ve yet to see an Egger’s film I haven’t enjoyed to some capacity. His attention to historical accuracy is apparent and much appreciated. I believe the pacing was perfect and helped to further instill a sense of dread among viewers. I found that Egger’s use of color added depth to the mood he tries to convey in this film as well, and I enjoyed the way he played with shadows and light throughout. I appreciate how the film highlights the ways in which the experiment negatively impacts each member of the group and doesn’t romanticize the dissent into alcoholism or alcoholism in general (poor Specs.) The last 10-15 minutes of the film left me wondering if it was more so a “last hurrah” for drinking for the group; or if the protagonist(s) will go forward with only occasional drinking or have remaining issues surrounding drinking/alcoholism.
