Beyond being a beautiful encapsulation of the Mexico of yesteryear, this film offers something quasi-metaphysical in character. Buñuel chooses the perfect scenery, the perfect rhythm to each moment; it has an ethereal quality to it. It's a solemn piece, very sober and "Castillian" in ambience.

Every shot in this film can stand alone as a painting. The aesthethic judgement of Rohmer remains undefeated. Possibly the most beautiful film I've ever seen, the colors jump off the screen, etc.

Manages to capture a feeling of desolation, perhaps specific to the modern world. The protagonists can’t bring themselves to believe in love, alienated, etc.

Last sequence is a poem in film. Very experimental. Feels otherworldly too, but that’s probably a product of the time gone by since (Cold War Italy feels beyond foreign).
