The Art Nouveau movement was at its peak in 1910 which is the year in which Death in Venice was set. Its influence is hugely apparent in the interior design and furniture throughout the film, but especially at the resort in Venice. Sinewy, flowing lines and organic shapes are characteristic of the movement as (the “beautiful” side of) nature was its inspiration.
This natural influence on the mis-en-scene made sense for the seaside location where Gustav is, indeed, inspired by…

There was a subtle action that repeated twice in the film. Noticing this connection sparked additional interpretations and potential insight into Camille and Paul’s relationship.
At Prokosch’s house, Paul goes inside the eccentrically-decorated room and begins to flirt with Francesca. As Francesca leaves, Paul feels her up and smacks her on the butt. Immediately Camille enters, passing Francesca in the doorway.
