    Recent fantasy animes have absolutely spoiled the genre for me. In 2024, you have some of best fantasy animes in recent years that pushes the envelope of storytelling and animation. Whether it's the quiet, graceful depiction of the timeless cycle of life in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End to the beautifully-captured themes of friendship and humanity's relationship to nature in Dungeon Meshi, the genre has matured to create some outright modern classics.

    Perhaps that's why I simply can't shake the disappointment…

    I can't tell if being a musical made it better or worse and I honestly don't care.

    What I do know is that when I watched this at the SFF 2024, the audience guffawed when Zoe Saldana launched into her third song.

    The film just suffers from juggling too many tonal shifts; which is ironic in comparison to how one of its current awards competitor, Anora, deftly handled its shifting themes and tones.

    Movie would have rated higher if my wife didn't keep humming Taylor Swift whenever Joe Alwyn showed up on the screen.

    In all seriousness, first act was brilliant. It's fantastic. It was an easy 5/5 for me. Guy Pearce and Adrian Brody's performance propels the pacing and conflict.
