About halfway in, I thought I had finally realized the true motive to all of tough newspaper woman Kathy Doyle, née Ferguson's (Barbara Stanwyck) machinations: to destroy police captain Charlie Alidos (Royal Dano), for his remark that "[her] work should be raising a family, having dinner ready for [her] husband when he gets home."
