Everyone depicted seems perfectly lovely, but this is a complete nothing of a film. Absolutely no story here. A 10-minute YouTube video stretched out into a feature. Didn’t help that Julia was watching Abigail in the seat next to me, which was infinitely more visually interesting.

Beyond Utopia 2023
An incredibly frustrating mashup of two documentaries that vary wildly in quality. One is an incredibly harrowing story about people fleeing an oppressive regime. The other is your standard biased and ahistorical anti-Communist propaganda. I am by no means a North Korea defender, but you can easily critique the regime and it’s many crimes without resorting to double-standards and lies by omission.
The intimate narratives of persecution and escape are thrilling enough to make the piece work more than it doesn’t. However,…
