    ~~ TIFF 2023: Film #8 ~~

Much like the art form at its centre, Swan Song is a graceful, polished showcase of one of Canada's national treasures. The way in which it pulls back the velvet curtain, delving into the psychological toll of dance—and the National Ballet's pursuit against decades of racial prejudice—is both eye-opening and beyond admirable. McMullan has delivered another beautifully complex piece of art, one unafraid to jeté between brutal honesty and sheer elegance. It's beautiful, it's poignant, and, much like the eponymous ballet, it's unequivocally one of this year's masterpieces.

Well, it’s official: Damien Chazelle has done it again. Despite its (highly-publicized) exuberance and debauchery, Babylon is packed with charm, wit, and, yes, an ungodly amount of chaos—still, unadulterated passion seeps through every frame. It’s clear that Chazelle knows what he’s doing; he has a vision, an ambitious one, and manages to hit every intended mark. Furthermore, Robbie and Pitt are at the top of their game, though it’s Hollywood newcomer Calva who truly steals the show: I can’t wait to see…

I either write for the heart, or the feet… you either want the music to make you dance, or to make you feel.

A maestro of the highest order. Zimmer has always topped my hierarchy of score composers—Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End was, in early-2016, the score that got me *into* scores, inducting me into a near-decade of sonic opulence, unfettered emotivity, an enhanced soundtrack to transform each day to an adventure. At this point, my Spotify Film Scores…

Fascinating: the way in which the most compelling element of the logline is whittled to a whisper in Bong Joon-Ho’s latest. That’s not to say that Mickey 17 isn’t a total romp—no, the script intrigues, bolstered by a spectacular performance by a never-better Pattinson. Slack-jawed satire—opaque, yes, and often all the better for it—oscillates with a philosophical undercurrent that, though perhaps not as poignant as in the underlying text, nevertheless lingers. That said, perhaps it was a disservice, reading the…

Running to another screening right now, so… full review TK. But… my goodness. Stunning, devastating, powerful. I’ll be mulling over this one for a long, long time.

(And Harry Styles can act! Super impressed by this sophomore cinematic appearance)!

Best of the fest! Favourite of the year (so far)! And maybe one of the top five Pixar films ever????

Maybe it’s because I relate strongly to Ember, and see a lot of my own life reflected in her arc, but I absolutely adored this. The world crafted by Sohn (and the animators) is so vibrant, so innovative, that it comes entirely to life on-screen, and the physical mechanics behind each element’s unique power set…
