Steamboy 2004
Undeniably made for a younger audience than Akira, Steamboy still deals with thorny issues and shifting alliances, a backdrop of widespread violence, and a protagonist who can just do everything really well.
Sometimes you lose something in the shift from the hyper-detailed backdrop of Neo-Tokyo from Akira to the relatively muted backdrop of steampunk London here, but some places deep down under the city start to resemble H. R. Giger locations, and the action ramps and ramps until … I just ran out of steam.

Candyman hasn’t been this creepy since the first one, and the whole movie looks pretty as hell, starting with the shots of the buildings in the Chicago fog, a murky mirror to the opening shots panning over Chicago streets from the first movie.
The choice to make Candyman invisible except in mirrors was a weird one, and it makes all the kill scenes pretty underwhelming and not scary. Most of the creepiness comes from one early scene and then wondering…

If Nicolas Winding Refn wanted to say something about the way Hollywood (or advertising, or men, or the world) take young women and use them up and destroy them, was the best way to do that to cast an underage actress, make her take her clothes off, constantly talk about how beautiful she is, and have Keanu Reeves shove a bunch of shit in her mouth? I suggest that it is not.
