“Do you think I can start over again?”

This movie started off as a slow burner, which gave us an insight of what life was like for this family in Japan: the father struggling with unemployment and hiding it by wearing a suit outside (the desperation for a job reaches the point where he doesn’t even bother hiding his cleaner outfit from his wife when returning home) the mother oblivious to this deceit, the older son wanting to leave Japan…

I was watching this on the plane and I didn’t get the chance to sleep after - a truly exhilarating film. I really enjoyed the suspense throughout as the parasitic family continuously ran the risk of being discovered by “the host” in their home, the class divide between the two families (one living in a now-flooded one-floor home, while the other lived in an expansive mansion) that led to one exploiting the other as well as the smug reaction of…

    Wow.

I am simply lost for words at the sheer brilliance of this marvel of cinematography from start to finish; the intricately woven threads of a cat-and-mouse game between the Korean Resistance and the Japanese Police Force, coupled with the layers of plot reinforced with shock twists and intrigue, kept me glued to my seat in anticipation. One thing I enjoyed about this movie is the blend of action and comedy (which I found quite wholesome) throughout, which I would even say reflects the day to day life of a yakuza member. The cinematography was very good throughout, with good shots of the beach and city of Tokyo as it was in the 90s. The choice of soundtracks were quite nice too, adding to the intensity of certain scenes. However, I didn’t really like that the truce which was made with the Anan clan got off-screened, as I feel it would’ve been a better opportunity to visualise the grand scheme of things.
