    Coming of age classic-- dream big, but weirdly enforce negative gender stereotypes bigger????

    It is a beautifully built world in both animation and storytelling. The plot hangs on an edge between fantasy and reality, pushing the viewer to make their own destiny.

    Yet there is a lack of character development outside of constantly reinforcing arguably negative gender norms. The character of the princess is just uncomfortable at times. She is given no profound backstory, motives, and the most basic development.…

    Why have dialogue when you have Hans Zimmer?

    I think it is actually quite profound the depth of character development and storytelling Nolan accomplishes without having characters speak, as well as the telling of a narrative without true main characters. I prefer it this way actually, it lets the horrors of war and beauty of hope speak for themselves through a beautifully shot film.

    It seems difficult to relate to the major based on her initial depiction. She is constantly displayed on a liminality of robot and man (or maybe an excuse for extra nudity), her demeanor and decision making also matching. Yet throughout the labyrinthine reality-bending plot I think there is a level of relatability in her innate humane desire to discover herself and her purpose.

    Unmatched animation for the era, as well as a mesmerizing cityscape design, dramatic pacing and plot shifts…
