So many superlatives packed into this classic that I find something new to appreciate with every one of my viewings:

There's a point about two-thirds of the way through the movie when the register suddenly shifts to the mythic. It elevates the movie to a whole other level. That near wordless final action sequence is pure visual poetry, seared into my memory.
A sweeping epic. It's the longest I've sat in one theater to watch a single piece (though it was originally released as a four-part series on Italian TV), and after six hours, I couldn't leave the theater for ten minutes, I had to come down off an emotional ledge. It's a tale of Italian history told through the story of one family, and by the end of the movie, you'll know and love them the way you do your own family.
I did not know this would end on a cliffhanger, I would've kept the "Part I" in the title as it was originally. At the screening I attended, when the "To Be Continued" popped up on screen, someone shouted "What the hell?!" The theater was in such collective silent shock that no one even applauded. Not the last impression you want to leave an audience with in what was otherwise a joyous experience.
