Different. Avante grade. But in a beautiful way. If ever there was beauty in a film, it would be found in this one. And it was nostalgic for me having grown up in Waco. I can now appreciate the squat, browned live oaks that were a hallmark of my childhood. Malick made them beautiful.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I appreciate the redemption of the family at the end. Especially the false turn of Royal and then his genuine transformation. A bit strange. The parts with Royal and his grandsons and the fixing of the disaster at the wedding were heartwarming. Very theater-like.
I kind of wished they stayed friends at the end. That's my main quarrel with this.
But I think it accurately captures the loneliness/alientation of long distance relationships--whether that distance is being in vastly different places or the distance is caused by too much work and not enough attention. It makes sense that the two would grow attached to each other under such circumstances.
I'm learning about myself that I really like love stories. Not even just romantic love, but stories centering around relationships. That's what cinema really is.
Actually really good. Cinematography is dope. Enjoyed watching this.
