    Blue Velvet

I watched this yonks ago and was underwhelmed by it. I was significantly more whelmed by it this time but it’s just not a Lynch film that’s particularly for me. I’ve watched Eraserhead and Wild at Heart recently and there’s a really pleasant elusive quality to them. With this, the elusiveness doesn’t click and just makes it feel like the story is being somewhat improperly told. The weirdness and kink-related content is interesting and works well (I think these elements must…

    Ne Zha 2

    ★★★

This breaks the Disney/Pixar mould but in a completely opposite way to Flow. Whereas that film is dialogue-free and aims at universality, Ne Zha 2 is packed with rapid-fire dialogue and is very culturally specific.

Walt Disney knew exactly what the child of the 1920s needed to be engaged by edutainment - to be incessantly hectored by intertitles.

I have no idea why people are rating this higher than one star - Walt Disney will never thank you for this, he’s dead.

Could have sworn I’d previously written a review of this but apparently not. This showing was for the Minus Color version. It was fun to watch again in black and white but having just watched Paper Moon and its accompanying commentary, it was clear it had not been shot with black and white in mind. The film itself is great - I still need to watch the original Godzilla but this is the best giant monster film I’ve seen aside from the original King Kong.
