...I'm not watching this again.
...okay, okay, I'll elaborate...
Depsite making a few of these films myself, I don't gravitate towards horror movies. I fear I'll stumble upon one that will REALLY shake me up...and The Substance did just that. Usually I can stomach some scary, and even gory shit, but this movie and Nosferatu chilled me to the bone.
The former turned out to be one of the darkest horror films I ever saw...until I saw...The Substance...good god...

The pacing of Anora works beautifully for the story it wants to tell. The first act makes the audience feel the thrill of initial attraction and impulsiveness we've all felt in the early stages of a relationship. For those of you who have had a relationship spiral out of control so fast you wonder how it got to that point, the second act will have you experience the same sensory overload right along with Ani, and it's very effective story-telling. I actually got Pulp Fiction vibes when the thugs came to the house.
A worthy recipient of the best picture academy award.

It's a beautiful story about the brutal and often unspoken reality of what it is like to deal with greif.
What is so amazing is that, despite my qualms with Adam Sandler, he made the role of Charlie one of his most powerful roles ever. Don Cheadle is great too. Donald Sutherland, with only two scenes, also makes a noteworthy appearance.
