  I aspire to have Dafoe’s earnest yet wild eyed cat-dad energy, so long as I can also have the bassoonist pipe, smoking jacket, and embroidered brimless hat for my alchemy trances.

  The film was fine— although I found it to be both too silly and too self serious to really generate a sustainable sense of dread in me. As a big fan of gothic literature and a fan of campy horror, I wasn’t pleased with either aspect in this adaptation.…
