George Lucas’ most subversive film, I think. And maybe his most interesting, along with American Graffiti (another film I need to rewatch).
Well done low budget dystopian film that still resonates today. I wish Star Wars was more unsettling and dystopian like this, but then it wouldn’t be Star Wars, and I low-key do enjoy the coziness and predictability of Star Wars.
But then again, Star Wars doesn’t have Donald Pleasence and Sid Haig.

In the first 30 minutes of this film you see LT snort coke in front of an elementary school after dropping off his sons, smoke meth while doing a drug deal, and free base heroin before crying naked with two sex workers.
But, what grounds this film’s sleazy character is Harvey Keitel’s amazing, nuanced performance. Behind his debauchery and criminal activities, you can sense his intense self-hatred and inner turmoil.

I spent a lot of the time watching this film feeling very confused about the narrative elements: What year is being portrayed?…
