  although on a superficial level there’s a clear critique of bourgeois notions of respectability and patriarchal expectations, put in its historical context the movie is ultimately a critique of communist Czechoslovakia. the movie carries an anarchistic spirit to it that comes from its rejection of norms, socio-political and artistic, in favor of individual expression. individualism is its main message. there’s a lot of critiques one can see in the movie against czech communism (corrupted, patriarchal, state capitalism, etc) but its…
