This movie bothered me. I didn’t not enjoy it while I was watching, but it felt funny. It took multiple friends with experience in sex work telling me they hated this movie, and why, for me to articulate what it was that made me uncomfortable.

It’s interesting to me that the same person who recommended “the killing of a sacred deer” also recommended this, because I view them both as being more akin to filmed theater works than things devised first with film in mind. As with the other film, it has to do with the reading of dialogue (spoken, as if composed of a string of monologues, to the rafters). This couldn’t have been made today, not because it’s offensive (it isn’t and it’s aged shockingly gracefully), not because performers and directors lack the imagination (the surprise success of this made sure to spark generations of very good, weird people), but because we don’t give anyone the opportunity for such widescreen, bizarre, campy, unstructured play.
Who is this for? (Children, but it doesn’t talk down to them, and it’s as much for adults) Why? (I couldn't even begin to speculate)…
