    might be one of my favorite opening scenes of all time, due entirely to the statue of liberty coming into view upside down. felt as triumphant as watching the apes discover tools in 2001: a space odyssey. sick as hell. 

    finally a payoff for reading ayn rand’s the fountainhead. only took 5 years!

    like the princess diana movie with kristen stewart that came out a couple years ago, this is a movie that they should have waited another 30 years to make. on its face, it’s generally entertaining, but it’s very bizarre to watch in current political times, and it doesn’t help that the movie knows that. jeremy strong and sebastian stan absolutely bodied their roles, although stan’s trump sounds far too much like jerry seinfeld. would have definitely been a better movie if cohn was the leading role instead of trump.

    something that bothers me about how we typically discuss the holocaust is that it has been singularized among genocides. its atrocities are perceived as uniquely evil and horrific against the jewish people, and as a consequence, it’s considered antisemitic to compare other genocides (especially those perpetrated by israel) to it. 

    but when we constrain discussion of the holocaust to actions of the past, all that allows us to do is hide our heads in the sand when the same patterns…
