  Though overstuffed and overpaced, Jordan Vogt-Robert's mix of Jurassic Park and Apocalypse Now has enough visual flair to make for a more often than not engaging watch. The two ingredients, however, are at odds throughout the whole runtime. Vogt-Roberts presents several beautiful compositions resemblinng both inspirations but the script fails to properly blend the political commentary of traumatized Vietnam soldiers film with the schlocky spectacle of kinds of apes, one of them giant, fighting other animals, most of them giant.…

  Very good at showing how, even when you're there on your own volition, your manager gave you backup on any causes of worry, everybody in the crew treats you right, you establish every reasonable safety precaution like safe words and gestures, the shoot immediately stops at your discomfort and people try to comfort you - you can still feel pressured to do a scene.   It doesn't exactly feel like self-parody and it doesn't exactly feel like Tarantino jumped the shark, but The Hateful Eight most definitely does not feel as well crafted as any of his other films bar Death Proof. The bursts of gory violence are timed for big laughs, but the narrative lacks the usual mix of importance, freshness and cleverness.
