Even in what is an incredibly shot action movie, Kurosawa displays incredible awareness of human nature. Apart from the ‘bandits’, no group of people are homogenised and explicit efforts are made to emphasise the differences between individuals even within collectives.
Raises very potent moral questions about cycles of violence - the farmers almost immediately condemn a helpless bandit to death - what differentiates these people apart from who holds the power over whom?
It’s also incredible how this is very…
“Truth and illusion George, you don’t know the difference.”
“No, but we must carry on as though we did.”
Overwhelmingly and exhaustingly brilliant. I think this is somehow equally both anti and pro marriage.
