A coming of age spiral textured by VHS and the psychogeography of the Japanese urban sprawl through the eyes of a teenage girl who goes “sugar dating” in the hopes of saving enough money for an object (a ring) she considers magical and necessary.

I caught this at IFC recently because I wanted to know the live action film work of the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion. At times playful and decadent but also sometimes terrifying , I can best…

A salacious character study set against the bland backdrop of suburban Southern US. The Lifetime tv mystery movie score, energy and aesthetics help bring together the tight script and the great acting. A film that feels like it’s telling itself its own ridiculous premise over and over again, as an actor would repeat scenes to embody a fantasy beyond morality or “truth”.

I didn’t hate this. Very interesting choices that left me wanting more, if the first half of the film had moved faster this would’ve been a way less boring ride. I like the choices made here, and honestly appreciate it as something completely curve ball from the rest of the usual  super hero cinematic universe trash. The musical aspect of it made sense to me with their spiral, but it didn’t quite land as well as it could have. I feel this will age better than people think.
