Diabolique 1955
Wow. Insane final sequence and such a perfect mix of suspense and horror throughout. The contrast between the two protagonists was so clever and helped create the most interesting relationship dynamic ever. Also I’ve (foolishly) never quite appreciated the use of shadows as much as I did in this. Film noir you will be seeing more of me

The Witch 2015
Religion meeting its inevitable conclusion (or rather, its intended end-goal) of being a form of martyrdom for women — regardless of whether or not they obey. That the devil preys on Thomasin’s inherent vulnerability by virtue of her womanhood really drove that point home. Also very Adam-and-Eve-esque in that Thomasin gets the blame for her family’s suffering despite the father’s role in their exile, the crop failures, the selling of the silver cup, and Caleb’s fate. Their religious beliefs ultimately being their primary source of misery and torment was a very fitting end.
