Really, really weak. Even when there is a sequence that Derrickson could bring his particular flair to, it's pretty bland. Very much a collect paycheck film, even for the actors. Multiple genre film that does not excel at anything.
In some ways, it makes me think Derrickson could do a decent Resident Evil film. If his heart was into it.
Paid more attention to some details this time around, especially every little indicator of how Kimi feels around Totsuko and how she might feel about her. Every scene between them is so precious. How emotionally vulnerable Kimi is and how emotionally intelligent Totsuko is.
While this film isn't Lesbian Gaze: The Movie like Liz and the Blue Bird is, Yamada is very deliberate in showing us Totsuko's gaze of Kimi. I really love the subtle use of Lesbian Pride colors…
Yamada expanding the queer/lesbian canon in anime once again. Bless her for finding a way to express herself through her confines. We hear you loud and clear, queen. The film largely takes place on the grounds of a Catholic school, for goodness sake!
Yamada does a bigger mic drop than Liz and the Blue Bird with the last cut of the post credits scene. Don't miss it!
