I think this is an example of a less-than-adequate book-to-movie adaptation. Despite the failings of the cinematic translation, which causes some segments of the film, particularly in the first hour, to feel ungodly long. It improves over time but still, it puts a serious dent in the viewing experience. The source's material still manages to shine through at times though.
