Anjaam - Heute Liebe, morgen Rache..., 孽爱, Каприз
god tier lightly problematic feminist revenge b-movie - not as well directed as something like female prisoner scorpion, but this just spoke to me on a very deep spiritual level, possibly because it has dance numbers and an incredible soundtrack. shah rukh khan dismantles his entire celebrity mythos before it was even built - a warning for the women he would go on to sweetly stalk about what would happen if they dare say no in a system rigged against them. but taking everything from a woman just leaves her with nothing to lose, and unlike her male revenge story counterparts, she won't make it easy on you by using a gun. there are not enough chef's kisses in the galaxy for the ending.
Few thoughts:
1. In an ideal world, Madhuri Dixit would be recognized as one of the greatest mass heroes India has ever produced.
2. No one plays the creep like SRK. Full can't-look-at-screen-anymore feeling at so many scenes.
3. Film does an EXCELLENT job in showing how literally every single man is trash.
4. When a woman tells you that a man makes her uncomfortable, believe her!!
5. Ending is insane and makes me want to lie on the floor and think about life for a couple of hours.
6. ACAB but make it intersectional!! Women cops are as bad as men cops, thank you Rahul Rawail for showing us the truth.
7. Finally, and I cannot emphasize it enough.... MADHURI DIXIT MAAASSS!!
Half star gone only because realising what the song 'Channe Ke Khet Mein' is really about was my first and worst childhood ruined moment.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
nursing a man back to health only to kill him properly? iconic behavior
three starz bc it overloads w the woman torture
The mental brutality depicted in those scenes and the dark themes explored are so surreal that it is traumatising. The producing team exaggerated the scenarios to the extreme to maximise the emotional message. It is very reflective of basic, savage human nature though. There is no need to begin describing the uniquely dangerous acting of Shahrukh Khan or the transition of Madhuri Dixit from a gorgeous housewife to a revenge seeking warrior. Worth seeing, all in all.
SRK Filmography
the first thing that happened to SRK in this movie is that his face got shoved into a big sheet cake while a group of women shouted "happy birthday" at him, and at that he said "i am going to become the joker" and he did! and then this becomes a feminist revenge movie?? i was not prepared!! madhuri dixit chomped that man's arm!!!!!
happy belated birthday to the only man who could play a psychopath and still bring me some sense of comfort on this election day
Fun Chaotic Feminist revenge thriller, kind of stupid but Madhuri and SRK are just so hot !
"My life is not as necessary as your death"
A bleak, bleak film, tackling the endless depravity of patriarchal structures, first through the lens of a romantic comedy pushed to fulfil the inherently violent desires of its central male protagonist, and later as a revenge film, retaliating against institutions that uphold and profit from the continued suffering of women (the court, the prison cell, the household, and cinema generally as a desire fulfilling gaze.) It's a tough watch, especially its second half, but Madhuri Dixit is such a captivating performer, many of the surrounding flaws mostly melt away. Rage!!!
In 90's Bollywood where romantic heroes often bask in the glow of adoration, Shah Rukh Khan dared to traverse the shadows, crafting an embodiment of audacious malevolence that transcended the paradigms of cinema in Bollywood. He ventured beyond the conventional realms of his charming persona, delving into the dark corridors of villainy in films like 'Baazigar', 'Darr' and 'Anjaam'. Anjaam opens like a normal SRK movie where you'll see him flirting with girls. But this introduction, a deceptive prelude showcasing SRK's flirtatious escapades, cunningly masked his impending descent into the abyss of obsession and madness!
As the narrative unfurled, Shah Rukh Khan's Vijay stood as a paragon of sinister magnetism, compellingly essaying the character's insatiable desire for Madhuri Dixit's character,…
your honour, my client was simply going through her joker phase
Woah, SRK is a real psychopath in this one. This is such a crazy movie. So disturbing. There are parts that genuinely made me feel sick to my stomach.
Unlike movies similar to this like Baazigar and Darr, this isn’t really SRK’s movie. It completely belongs to Madhuri Dixit. She steals the show. Her transformation from the beginning to the end is insane yet believable.
I watched this last night while my partner went out to a Charli XCX dance party to live out his best BRAT dreams. Suffice it to say, we had very different evenings.
My perception of what this movie was going to be changed several times since choosing to throw it on. A thriller could be cool, I thought. A half hour goes by, and I'm like - so, it's a squicky comedy? The hour mark hit - a melodrama, then. But no, I needed only wait another half hour to realize that this is pure 100% trauma porn, like "guess how much you're going to regret casually watching this movie" trauma porn.
Yikes, though, for real. Like I was taken…
