Avargal sets the Tamil Cinema one step higher towards the International standard. K. Balachander is a such a visionary who places the post modern concepts, which would not be relevant then in the society. In a K.Balachander movie, people always feel real, the canvas may seem like a theater stage, sometimes over the top but the people are never over the top, they are underscored, real, the neighbours and family members you have heard of and seen. Avaragal is no exception, it maintain its humaist quality, even though being little dramatic. Avargal is a story of a single mother, who begins a new life after abusive marriage and finding solace with it. K. Balachander's writing can evoke monumental emotions with…
Amazing in so many ways (especially formally) but I'm predictably obsessed with Kamal's performance and how Janardhan and his dummy condense the film's dynamics of emotional sadism into a single/split personality, his tragicomic rictus the dissonant counterpoint to Anu's Mona Lisa smile.
According to my knowledge, Rajini hasn't played such an evil character after or before Avargal. The villain here isn't some mass character getting punchlines of his own like an SJ Surya from Maanaadu, or even a character which does unspeakable horrors like a Nasser from Kuruthipunal. Here he is a toxic ex husband who is as much a sadist as much as he is emotionally manipulative. Easily one of the greatest negative characters seen in Tamil cinema.
This is surprisingly the third film where I am seeing Kamal and Rajini play supporting characters in a film where the protagonist is a female, and it's truly amazing seeing it now after all these years. Avargal is definitely a must watch film where Balachander delves in deep into the complex relationships seen on screen, and it would be nice if we see more films like this in the new Tamil cinema as well.
Also, My 50th Kamal movie 😌
Rajnikanth establishes himself in a negative role and as a strong misogynist. Interesting film.
The Film tells the Life of a woman after divorce . K Balachander has taken the Movie in his own storytelling style . It is surprising that some scenes were arranged during that period
Rajini's Villainism is dark and funny
Even though kamal doesn't make most of screenspace as Rajini its Sujatha who carries the whole movie.
Remarkable film.
Take a bow KB!!!
What an absolute masterpiece!!
One of best character studies I have had the privilege to witness...
this was directed by my ancestor!! so cool that he was a pioneer in Tamil cinema. This movie was also fire, unexpected plot twists, surprisingly very conservative (but I'm sure this was progressive at the time). loved it! Kamal and rajini were pretty incredible in these roles. also "Juniorrrr" song is too good
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I liked the film as you can see in my ratings.
K.Balachander created a beautiful story around a minimal number of characters. Each one of them were well written, backed up by very strong performances by the cast.
I was kind of surprised by the visual metaphors used in this film. The camera movements were chosen carefully and the scenes were staged in such a good way that every scene was conveyed so beautifully. Every time Anu gets reminded of the unpleasant memories with her husband the scene transcends into that particular memory so seamlessly.
My favorite memory was when she is getting ready to move…
One of K balachander's gems, that rare tamil film where the heroine actually has choices to choose from, than being forced to be with one guy. Also has incomplete love, sadistic love, unrequited love beautifully portrayed in just one movie. Good movie to start with KB's filmography!
K Balachander's those people (Avargal) revolve around female wanting nothing more than love losing a lover by an accident getting a husband as psych ignoring an admirer who wants nothing more than love ending by standing on her own!
Typical KB :)
Take a bow, KB 🛐
