This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
religion is weird. scenes in the quran class gave me so much anxiety. it’s so strange for punishment and hell is such a big cornerstone in school education, when in faith it truly isn’t. i remember being a kid and having this infatuation of wanting to know how to make god happy.
watching aya and walid run with their kites. watching her relationship with her mom, and how she wants aya to have a childhood (and have both an islamic and regular education). i loved when she was doing dua and kept lookin up to see if god would appear literally. when aya walks out in her mothers niqab, there was a moment of comedy but that was quickly overshadowed by her distress.
aya is such a charming lead, her questions so inquisitive, and her innocence. i cannot put to words how much comfort her mother brought to me as the audience, when she held her close.
poor aya is torn between having a childlike childhood or the expectation her father has already set for her. her innocence and curiosity is so admirable; her bravery too, telling her Quran teacher "Allah does not punish children" when he tried scare her.. ugh kids deserve to be taught by love and compassion as their root especially when it comes to the word of God. the mother daughter bond is too precious, the hug in the end scene has so much depth, myriam really wants to protect her daughter from the cruelty of both her worlds and for it to be kinder to aya than it has been to her. i hope every girl like aya and myriam find the beauty and freedom that religion really is like and not the one they had been forced to experience.
Heart breaking :(
dad smoking cigs while preaching about what women in the religion are obliged to do, i have to laugh
Sad and beautiful at the same time and I wish it was longer
poor aya she only wanted to fly her kite
so beautiful.
the mother daughter relationship had so much depth for such a short film, you could truly feel how torn myriam was over aya’s childhood and education and the love they had for eachother was so evident.
it is increíble how much depth can be found in the mother-daughter relationship. religion does awful things to children’s innocence
