This was the FIRST Netflix watch party we had using Netflix Party and I have to say it went pretty decently.
Michelle Obama is so positive. She talked about “the power of gathering”, listened to Kirk Franklin, and recounted her family history. I didn't know much about her family to be honest. Her brother, Craig, talked about how no one should have to deal with their sister being the most famous person in the world.
I have to admit it was sort of funny to see women breaking down crying at Michelle Obama's book signing. I mean, people can get emotional. It was also disheartening to hear that Michelle's high school guidance counselor told her she wouldn't be able to…
☆"You have to find the tools within yourself to feel visible, and to be heard, and to use your voice."☆
Sweet, warm, but cinematically shallow, the new Netflix documentary Becoming is a charming look into the post-White House life of the Most Admired Woman two years in a row, former First Lady Michelle Obama, as she embarks on a book tour of the titular bestselling memoir.
Obama also narrates the Nadia Hallgren-directed biodoc, as she reflects on her time in the spotlight and how it feels now to be "unplugged, for the first time, in a long time." Of course, for someone of this magnitude and cultural relevance, she's never out of the media's or the public's attention, and has…
Argued with my mum about feminism for half an hour after this ended so... good?
The heart is for Godspeed
Michelle Obama for president!!
Very disappointed with this.
Let me start off by saying that I love Michelle and I absolutely LOVED her book. I listened to the audiobook and it was powerful, exciting, and such a great insight into what her world has looked like.
I didn’t even know this documentary was coming out, but was excited to watch it considering how much I loved the book (and this has the same title).
During the last 5 minutes of it, however, I said to myself, “this feels like a compilation of a bunch of deleted scenes from the real documentary”.
This documentary didn’t know what it wanted to be. A showcase of her book tour? A visualization of the book? A deep dive…
i’ve already read her book with my mom and even though i’m only living in a third world country in north africa, this woman speaks to me in VOLUMES and inspires me so much. she really is the first lady any country would kill to have and strangely made me want to change the world as well, as much as i can 🥺
the nuance of liking a figure & knowing that individuals aren't responsible for every action during a presidency but also knowing they're not above criticism and accountability :/
such an inspiration! black women are so powerful!!!!
