A pre-med student and her friends encounter the death of a patient that exhibited symptoms of rabies. They are soon faced with an even bigger problem as their patient comes back from the dead and infects the people on campus, causing a lockdown and trapping the students inside.

Mikhail Red used to be a great director and visionary (Rekorder, Birdshot, Neomanila) but he started to lose his greatness once he went mainstream (Eerie, Dead Kids). Block Z seems promising at first: billed as the Philippines' first large-scale zombie flick and featured a large ensemble consist mostly of A-list Filipino actors.
But as the film went on, it became dumber... and dumber... and dumber. No matter how hard I try to just sit back and enjoy the film, I still can't help but to nitpick what I don't like about it, whether it's the one-dimensional characters, cringey lines, terrible plot twists, noticeable plot holes, dumb film logic, and the film's subtle political commentary that seems wasted.
But hold up... why am I excited for the sequel after that tease of an ending?

I enjoyed this but it has a LOT of problems.
Also, if you infected a person on a wheelchair, would the zombie use the wheelchair, would it magically gain the ability to walk (or shamble) or would it flop around like a fish out of water?

Zombie movies comes to the Philippines! And it's got all the zombie cliches in place. Problems was that I didn't sense the drama in the actors faces, so if they weren't panicking , neither was I.

I don't understand the low reviews this movie has been getting. Nowhere is this close to international films, but for a Filipino horror movie, this is significantly one step ahead.
Joshua Garcia is someone to watch out because there's great potential in him. Julia Barretto's acting on that Dormitory scene with Ian Veneracion was also top-notch. Sometimes clumsy, sometimes cringey, but still an enjoyable and gripping film, in my opinion.
