What an absolutely delightful overlooked gem of a post-Scream slasher this is!! I didn’t overlook it on purpose. I actually knew it existed but confused it with Final Stab, which is another post-Scream slasher that’s also fun!
Anyhoo, this has Ms Kylie PADAM PADAM Minogue playing a total bitch, actually I guess she’s Ms Kylie LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION Minogue or Ms Kylie MY OH MY Minogue, they’re all bangers god my extremely homosexual ass loves her so much. But ANYHOO, this also has Molly Ringwald so how did I possibly confuse it with another movie and think I had seen it as if I could forget a slasher with Kylie alone? I wish I could tell you.

I remember when Cut came out. It was considered a something of a national embarrassment when Australia was desperately trying to trick the world into thinking we were having a cinematic renaissance with Chopper at the helm. (Note: 2000 also gave us The Wog Boy and Mr. Accident.) I think had I seen Cut back in 2000, I would have hated it. I was well into horror by that point with a diet of Hammer horror and Argento. Meta supernatural Australian slasher from 2000 starring Molly Ringwald. The plot centers around a group of film students out to finish a "cursed" slasher film that has never been finished. Bloody, fast paced, doom n gloom atmosphere, and the killer wears a cool looking mask. The meltastic ending was a nice touch. Underrated slasher imho.

Molly Ringwald must have really wanted that Sidney Prescott gig. She plays the actress who vanquished the masked killer agreeing to aid the young filmmakers now. Unfair to directly compare this Australian slasher to Wes Craven's Scream though. It's more what Scream 3 of the same year should have been.

An early 2000s slasher film that came shortly after the great success of "Scream" and you can absolutely tell. Its self-awareness, acknowledging and playing with the tropes and conventions of the slasher genre, is especially effective because of its setting within a film set. The vibe is very similar, but it still creates something unique with its elements of supernatural horror.
cast was lowkey crazy
First time seeing this since my teen years when I tracked down the (probably illegal) VCD, determined to see every movie I'd read about in Fangoria. This Australian riff on Scream - in which a group of film students attempts to finish an incomplete and cursed ‘80s slasher, only to meet its killer on location - isn't anywhere as smart or well-crafted as the Craven classic, but has some interesting ideas regarding the killer's identity. The story is kind of a mess due to some wonky editing, but there are nasty practical kills, a neat looking killer, and a quick runtime. And it's always cool to see Molly Ringwald though I'm not sure she was the best call to play "the aged starlet reprising her final girl role".
The second time I've seen an on-set weapon swap-out this week.
post-Scream meta slasher from Australia that has a lot in common with Theodore Roszak’s novel Flicker, establishing a masked killer as a proxy for the evils of a cursed film — surprisingly gnarly kills, a *lot* of horror references and I’m a sucker for horror films that prominently feature film school students (see also, Urban Legends: Final Cut)
