  Vorneweg und sich beim Rewatch bestätigend: wie grundehrlich doch „Robot War“ oder auch „Gunhed“ ist.

  
  Auf dem Fundament des erwartbaren und auch bekommenden, aber nie zu billigem Trash-Filmes ruhend was sich diesbezüglich allen voran durch die stereotypischen Dialoge und Charakter abzeichnet, bestätigt „Gunhed“ seine Prämisse in vollen Zügen.

  Mag die Prämisse um einen die Welt in Chaos stürzenden Roboterkrieg als Folge des neugefundenen Rohstoffes Texmexium und den daraus hervorgehenden, die Welt vernetzenden Supercomputern und deren Weiterentwicklung mit der KI Kyron-5 und der schließlichen Rebellion im Ausurfern zu besagten Krieg eher einen Rahmen bildend als große Literatur darstellend, so gut funktioniert sie eben als Plattform für die Welt wie die Action darin.

  basically a paul w.s. anderson movie written by hideo kojima, i adored every bit of it. a bunch of mercenary commandos hunting for treasure and running around in an anonymous industrial facility with steely-blue backlighting while being stalked by a evil robot with eyeball laser beams, with one of them eventually getting inside of this fucking huge mech half-way through the movie and having to blow their way out of this huge facility and eventually getting into this huge giant mech fight full of amazing pyrotechnics. the production design is maximum uber-tactile japanese cybertrash and the score sounds like it belongs in a 80s tony scott film. feels like this shit was tailor-made for my specific aesthetic interests, it's this immensely-produced rip-off of aliens, the terminator, escape from new york, predator and pretty much every bit of 80s sci-fi you can imagine and it's fucking awesome

  Masato Harada's Gunhed promises cyber punk'd scavengers stepping into a grimy nightmare adorned with endless industrialization with monstrous sentry robots guarding every square inch. Sounds like a fun time, but its intentional visual Cameron/Giger overload loses impact as the story rapidly spirals. Problems immediately evident in several world-building paragraphs starting the film followed by a narrator providing even more grim dystopian slop for viewers to wade through.
  
  What Gunhed actually delivers is miniature and full scale mechs in highly detailed corridors battling in close quarters amid smokey cap gun blasts. Impressive, intricate work expected from the studio that nutured Godzilla into the world's greatest balsa wood stomper. The excellent synth score is another high point.

  I first saw about twenty minutes of "Gunhed's" over-the-top mech imagery sometime in the late 90's, staying up past my bedtime and watching the Sci-Fi Channel...and I'm going to argue that might be the best way to watch "Gunhed," as finally seeing the film in its entirety about 25 years later didn't really illuminate much about the story or make me appreciate the film anymore than I did as a kid in my parents' basement.

  There's a good movie in here somewhere, but it feels haphazardly edited—I can't tell if they shot too much footage or not enough—in order to convey the plot to the viewer. Case in point: we open with two screens of text exposition...followed by a lengthy…

  If Gunheds story had been as good as its design and special effects this would be a cult classic with Criterion blurays and whatnot. Unfortunately the story is just an incomprihensible mess. Sure, the general idea is great with a group of ragtag scavengers looking for old technology to steal on an island which is basically just one big computer that wants to declare war on humanity. It's too bad that it's quite hard to follow with all the dubbed dialogue and the general feeling that there is a lot of plot left out. It's a real shame because the look of the movie is just so god damn delicious and the giant robots are to die for. Five stars for that but minus two for the bad dubbing, the crappy script and those damn kids.

  Sure, the acting, plotting, editing, and basically everything that traditionally glues together movies is mediocre at best here, but when you consider Gunhed is about a mercenary team infiltrating and pilfering an abandoned/destroyed island factory while chased by killer robots and the island's defenses, I say checkmate. The character's names are Bansho, Brooklyn, Babe, Barabbas, Bombbay, Boomerang, and Boxer. Once again, checkmate. Gunhed isn't concerned with "making sense" or "winning awards". Gunhed is concerned with having a fuckin' blast and blowing shit up. And, honestly, how many people are going to put on a movie from 1989 called Gunhed and ask for anything more than that?

  Awesome practical, tactile future. Endless corridors of intricate industrialism, punctuated by bursts of color in the form pink laser blasts and vats of glowing green goo. It's like a Terminator Future War on LV-426. The type of thing that looks so cool you could make a ten-minute YouTube video about it that makes it look like it's the greatest movie ever, which it's not. But it's pretty great to just look at.

  I can't decide if I want to see a 8K version of this, or if the hazy VHS rip with flickering scanlines is the only way to go. Half of the movie is in English, so had kinda a fun Han/Chewie communication style going on, watching, as I did, without English subtitles.

  The VHS rip from the Internet Archive has a Godzilla vs. Biollante trailer that plays before it, which, you know obviously made me cry.

  Can’t say I had any idea where anyone was or what they were doing in this movie. The Japanese people speak Japanese and the Americans speak English, but they understand each other perfectly. A mech robot drinks whiskey. There’s a highly coveted, depleted resource called TEXMEXIUM 🤣 

  Yeah this shit is a mess and a half and I wouldn’t even say it covers very many meaningful themes for the Cyberpunk+ Essentials list, however, there is a shit load of cool visuals with some dedicated set crafting, props and costumes that make this a pretty entertaining watch for deep cut scavengers! Oh and the soundtrack is pure subterranean cybertechno FIRE!
