  When Laura Mulvey coined the term "male gaze", she was examining a media landscape overwhelmingly dominated by stories about heterosexuals. The increase in diverse stories has opened up a series of interesting questions about how, say, a lesbian gaze works, or what male gaze looks like when it's turned on another man. Stephen Frears, for example, recently had to direct a scene where Hugh Grant first saw, and was smitten by, Ben Whishaw. How does a straight film-maker replicate how a gay man might see another man?
