RIP Irrfan 💔
"I like artists"
Some good sequences and cinematic cobwebs built.
It's easy to see the blunt Irrfan we saw in everything having his birth here.
tangle of crime and student politics in allahabad, with young couple jimmy shergill and hrishitaa bhatt (both attractive but slightly inert) caught in between. the real attraction is irrfan khan's seething performance in the villain role and the detailed evocation of the setting; as fascinating as the complex (and violent) maneuverings of the political rivals are, the focus is too often lost on the far more generic "innocents in over their heads" plot of the two lovers (although the final shootout is surprisingly well staged, using offscreen space and sight-lines to suggest a kind of fatal irony to every death).

“Tum election jeetne mein interested nahi lagte humko”
Cult classic
As much as I loved Irrfan, the film does not hold up anymore.
Haasil nhi hoti to Gulaal bhi nhi hoti
Ahead of it's time when released, but not by much iykwim. Irrfan Khan shines as Rannvijay! Surprisingly, dialogues are well written, natural. Story goes askew a couple of times and doesn't reach it's full potential I feel. Other than that, an alright movie which would've been good back when it came out.
P. S. I love getting little surprises while watching these older movies in the form of great actors that we see now, in their initial works! Same happened with me while watching Satya and it's so fun.
I don't know how it went from an Allahabad university politics drama to an inter-caste love story and honestly it's not that wild of a jump either but the film just lost me in the second half. Irrfan gave a fantastic performance though and the rumours are true, this was indeed one of his earliest performances that stood out. How I wish the rest of the film lived upto its potential too!
Irrfan puts the movie on the back. Acting of a highest order. A little sluggish screenplay but the story keeps it afloat, one of the earliest Irrfan Performances, even then he was so matured as an actor. One of his best performances.
"Tum log Guerilla ho, toh guerilla war Kiya jaayega. Guerrilla vuerilla padhe ho ki Naa padhe ho?"
Haan, Haan bhaiyyaji, woh aise jhaadiyon mai, jungle se se aakar.
"Haaaan, bass bass".
Irrfan 🤘🏾
Man, I miss Irrfan so much! There's not a day that passes by without thinking about him and maybe that's a reason I am taking it really slow to watch all of his films that I haven't watched because I want to keep atleast one film of Irrfan that I have not seen till the end of this road I am walking on.
The ground reality of what conspires within a particular government affiliated colleges that was relevant back then and it is relevant even now. The songs in this does not match the realism that the story exists in. When songs comes it breaks the illusion that becomes jarring at least for me. It seems like for the songs Tigmanshu Dhulia channels the upbringing that a film lover goes through in Hindi Cinema with songs and also the kind of movies that were made when the film was concieved also impacted the director’s choice for songs. To put it plainly, for the sake of argument the film’s realism is Anurag Kashyap and when the songs comes it switches to Karan Johar movies.…
